Highs, lows, and overnights

Well, the last couple of weeks have been long, fun, sleep losing, and busy. It all started when Auburn got sick.

Short story: She was itching a lot so I gave her benadryl. For some reason she got really anxious and started scratching more. She kept me up all night going from the couch to the floor to the rug then back again. When I got home from work the next day to take her to the doc I found a nice, out of the mouth, (trying to put it nicely) surprise on my couch. The vet told me it was the benadryl but she never reacted that way to it before. They gave her a shot of antibiotics, we got home in time for us to give us another surprise out the mouth, and she proceeded to be pitiful all night. At 2:30 am she gave us another surprise in bed (lets keep count now, that is 2 nights w/ less than normal 7 hours). I stayed home with her the next day and she began to feel better. It was heart breaking. She only gets on her bed when she really does not feel good so when she did not get off it I knew she was not feeling well.

Two weeks ago this Sunday Doug started his overnight shift. Being the inventory manager means any time the store does some "upgrading"/"remodeling" he gets to stay and supervise. He did almost 55 hours last week (5 nights) and about 45 this week (4 nights). Auburn did better than she ever had. There was still some clucking and anxious relocating (that's another 2 weeks of loss of sleep) from both of us :) but we made it through.

Last weekend we decided to take it easy so Doug could relax and we could catch up on some sleep. Ryan & Sarah came over and we spent the afternoon at the pool. Then we went out for dinner and drinks.

BIG side/related news: Ryan and Sarah are moving to our apartment complex in three weeks. They are even slated to be in our building. We are so excited. I have already apologized for the annoying neighbor upstairs who will not let them have a night to themselves. Ha! And I know Auburn is excited to make friends with their pug, Murphy.

I got off early today and spent a little extra time with Doug. Grocery shopping is done so now I can have a lazy Sunday (so excited!). We took Auburn to the vet for a follow up visit and dropped another $100 (everytime! How do they do it?) on her some better antihistamines and heart worm. Crossing fingers these work. If not, it's antibiotics for two weeks every month or so. :(

Tonight was dinner (the new Red Robin by our house) and a movie (Red Box - yeah we were on a budget after the vet). We get home and the house is quite. No barks, no excited whimpering, and no tap tapping of claws on the hallway floor. I go into the living room (where we left her) and she was not there. I checked in the kitchen (she has gone in there a couple of times) but she was not there either. Now, my heart starts to race. She hates the hard wood floors so she rarely leaves the comfort of her couch and 42" flat screen TV. :) So where do I finally find her lazy ass?? In the BED! I guess she was worn out from a big day at the vet so she put herself to bed. Ha! Love that doggy!

Still deciding on what to get into tomorrow. Who knows! Stay tuned!

Fireworks!

Saturday night we (Doug and I, his parents) went down to Old Town Alexandria to celebrate the 4th of July and the city's anniversary. We got there early to do a little shopping and to eat dinner at Chart House. Then we headed over to Oronoco Park to watch the fireworks. They set up a stage so the Alexandria Orchestra could play before the fireworks began and while they were being shot (you can hear the music in the video posted below). We had front row seats right behind the military and their families. After watching the Marines walk around 4 cannons set up right on the banks we concluded the firework booms were not going to be the only booms we heard that night. They were loud but tolerable. I think the Marines (aka 5 yr old boys) had a lot of fun shooting the cannons. Maybe a little too much... The sky opened up once and we got soaked (thankfully there was a parking lot close by we could hide under until the storm passed over) but other than that it was a perfect evening. The best part was they shot the fireworks off from a barge in the river. So no matter where you were sitting (we happened to have perfect seats) you had a great show. The city does it every year so hopefully we will be able to go back again next year.
